Words for Your Weekend:: Courage

"Courage is like--it's a habitus, a habit, a virtue:
You get it by courageous acts.
It's like you learn to swim by swimming.
You learn courage by couraging."
Mary Daly

I stopped in my tracks when I read this quote earlier this week. I had to put my book down and ponder for a while.  I love the idea of learning courage by "couraging".  It reminded me of the moment in We Bought A Zoo when Matt Damon's character talks about having 20 seconds of crazy courage.  I've thought about that on multiple occasions.  Sometimes we need to muster enough courage to do something scary for just 20 seconds.  When you've made it through that tiny amount of time, the most difficult part is behind you.

We learn courage by taking those 20 second risks; by tiptoeing just a smidgen out of our comfort zone.  When all those smidgens are added up over a lifetime, we can look back to find we've done some pretty incredible things.

And if it's true for gaining courage, couldn't the same be translated to any virtue we want to possess?  We gain patience by "patiencing", we increase love by loving, we develop creativity by creating.

I've been inspired to step slightly out of my comfort zone.  To pratice "couraging" more often in my day-to-day life.

What virtue do you want to possess?  How can you add that practice into your life right now?

If you need a little inspiration to increase your courage, feel free to snag the image above and hang it in a prominent place.  I made it just for you! :)

  1. I like this--I like the sound of the word "couraging." Thanks for sharing.

  2. I love that word, too! I keep finding myself thinking about it. :)
