Mom Moment::The Roly Poly Episode

Mom Moments:
I often find myself in situations I never could have predicted before having kids.
After years of experience as a Mama these strange happenings become almost commonplace, but I want to remember this time and all the craziness that goes with it.

At the end of their busy afternoon selling lemonade, cookies and popsicles, Ellie and Ethan burst through the mudroom door dirty and hungry.  Ellie quickly grabbed a cup off the counter and ran to the bathroom to get a drink of water.  Ethan immediately started to ask where I put his jar of roly polies.   I was in the middle of making one of our favorite (but time-intensive) dinners: Chicken Tikka Masala and naan.

I was busy taking bread out of the oven and didn't have enough hands or attention to address Ethan as quickly as he wanted.  He began whining as I tried to quickly finish what I was doing.  Suddenly a red-faced and sobbing Ellie stormed into the kitchen.  She screamed, "I ate a roly poly!" before dissolving into gut-wrenching sobs.  "I can still feel it!"

Meanwhile, Ethan is also screaming, "Where you put my jar?! Where are my roly polies?!"  In a split second, I realized what had happened.  Ellie, in her thirsty haste, had grabbed Ethan's bug jar off the kitchen counter, filled it up and took a refreshing swig before she checked to see that the cup was clean.

By this time Jason was involved and we all ran to the bathroom to check out Ellie's story.  Sure enough, Ethan's roly poly jar was on the counter, 1/3 full of water with one lone bug floating in it (he'd started with two).  As we stood there, gazing at the carnage, the full realization of his loss suddenly hit Ethan.  He asked, in a subdued voice, "Where is my roly poly?"  Ellie said, "I ate him, he's dead" and burst into tears yet again.

Ethan, grief-stricken, yelled, "Noooooooo!", loudly and slowly, just like in the movies.

I was suddenly overcome by the hilarity of this predicament and could hardly keep a straight face.

After hugs all around and a discussion about how Ellie can probably win the game "Have You Ever..." for the rest of her life because of this one incident (I mean, really, how many people can say they've swallowed a roly poly?  I only know one!), order is semi-restored and we enjoyed dinner together.

What is the weirdest thing that happened to you today?

  1. Oh my...I read that out loud to my girls and we all had a laugh!

  2. And your dinner sounds delish!! I'll have to try making that sometime (I had to google it though because I've never even heard of it lol)

  3. Aubrey,
    I'm glad you enjoyed it! Ellie is feeling better about the whole situation, so I can laugh about it now. It was SO hard not to at the time! By the way, I added the links to the recipes I use for the Chicken Masala and Naan. (I might add less jalapeno and/or cayenne pepper the first time you make it, especially if kids will be eating it...It's pretty hot!) We love it!

  4. That is hilarious. I love this story. I don't think I could have kept a straight face either. :D
