State Fair

We went to the State Fair today. It was hot, crowded, smoky, hot, crowded, and wonderful. We saw all the livestock and, of course, Ellie had to pick a pig to call Wilbur and one to call Uncle. She hoped Charlotte was also in with Wilbur, but we weren't able to see her. Spiders are good hiders, though.

My favorite moment of the day didn't include either of my children, which is unusual. We saw the very end of one of the competitions for the goats. One teenage boy earned 3 blue ribbons. He folded them and stuck them into his pocket as he walked his goat back to its' pen. As he was opening the gate another goat (which was inside the pen) reached over the bars and started eating the ribbons in the boy's pocket. He was able to get two of them back, but ended up just letting the goat keep, and eat, one of his hard-earned blue ribbons. I would have liked to have helped him, but I was laughing too hard. Plus, I'm not really an expert at getting non-food items away from goats.

If you are able to make it to the Utah State Fair, I'd highly recommend it. Despite the heat and the crowds, we had a lot of fun. There were several free activities for kids, including:

Little Hands on the Farm

(Ellie the Future FFA member)

and a huge hands-on Lego exhibit.

Can I just say that I'm so happy my daughter is this excited to ride the little 50 cent kiddie ride in the far corner of the carnival? I'm pretty sure she was the only person to ride this little horse all day. But she LOVED it and we didn't have to wait in line or anything!

For years I have bribed Ellie by letting her tell the ride-on equipment outside grocery stores this phrase, "If I'm good while I'm in the store, I can come sit on you when we're done. See you after I'm good!". She may not have known they were actually able to move until today. I hope that doesn't cause problems in the future...

And just because we can't have a post without a picture of our cute Peanut:
