Independence Day

We enjoyed a very laid-back Independence Day this year. Our neighborhood had a huge breakfast in the morning, which I took the kids to while Jason rode nearly 100 miles on his bike (I think we had more fun).

We relaxed for a while and then went to Grandma and Grandpa Hillman's for some festivities. We had a delicious dinner, including homemade root beer. The kids played in the water

and played, and played.

That's Ellie and her cousin Jane on the teeter-totter.

There were some fireworks and a lot of visiting. Grandma even had crafts for the kids (which I didn't get a picture of).

Ellie took this picture.

This is Ellie's "Fireworks Hat" she made it entirely on her own and traded it off with this tiara during the fireworks.

During the evening, I figured out why I love Independence Day so much. Not only do we get to celebrate our freedom and the country that I love, but it is also a time to just enjoy being together. It has not been commercialized like most of the other holidays we celebrate. I love that there are no presents! Just family and friends (and yummy food!). I can think of no better way to celebrate.

Happy Fourth of July!

ps- Did anyone else go to the fireworks in West Jordan? Do you know why they started so late? We saw an ambulance and a firetruck rushing into the park, but I haven't been able to find out what happened.
